My work place is at Hayward High school. It is a large school. My work place is located in Hayward. There are lots of staff that work there and lots of students that attend the school. Im pretty sure that most of the staff there has their college degrees. My workplace serves students and parents. The weaknesses of my work place is that students get to walk around using ipods and cell phones basically whenever they want and it is a distraction in class when it is time to work. The strength of my workplace is the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Another strength is that Hayward high does a lot of fun activities with their students. On Tuesday I began my work day. My mentor was absent but other councilors gave me work to do all day. They gave me task like dropping things off to classes and going to pick people up out of the classes. I did some filing and also some faxing. On my free time I met the security guard and he made me a badge so I could be official to the school. The badge had my picture, my name, and staff on there. At lunch I got to eat with students that I knew. The lunch was so good. They had pizza, quesidillas, sandwiches, and a snack room with juices, candy, chips and etc. My job Tuesday was fun. I was doing a task at all times. At the end of the day I got a little tired, but I managed to get through the day.  I am looking forward to next Tuesday.

My mentors name is Gerome Evans and he is a councelor at hayward high school. A typical day as a councelor is talking to kids about their grades, and doing mostly senior things. Making sure the kids are doing right in there classes, and just meeting with them and there parents in conferences. I actually became interested in this field because students depend on their councelors to help them with college things at regular high schools. I just wanted to bring some things we do at impact to hayward high to give them opportunites as well.

My main responsibility at my workplace is to get office work done and run all types of errands for my mentor as such as sending reminders to students to meet with my mentor. My title basically is being an assistant to my mentor. Each week I am leaning towards my project right. I will need to gather up information about what 10th graders will need in order to be ready for the PSAT and what they will need to do so that they can be ready for college. A regular day for me is the basic filing papers going to classes to excuse students, and just doing office work. A regular day at my workplace is sort of chill. I do the following that I listed above. There has been days when I do not really have to so anything because the task are completed ahead of time.

For my WLE project I plan to research information and use it for a presentation for 10th graders so they can know what they will need to do in order to attend college and what they will need in order to be prepared for the SAT and the PSAT. Ms. Winn actually came up with this idea because the first idea i had in mind was not going to work out so that was my second option. I am excited to do this project because I love to help others, and it would be fun to give information that I had already experienced to a grade that is lower than mines. My plan is to keep gathering up information so I can mold my final piece.

Today at my WLE I just did the regular work. My mentor asked me to do things like run errands for him such as picking up students from classes so they can meet with him about their grades. I also made copies of papers that were asking kids for their information to join academic sports at school. My mentor and I talked about how we can start gathering the information that I will need for my project as such as things about what sophomores will need in order to be ready for the PSAT and what they will need to know in order to be ready for college in the future. My mentor and I were suppose to start but did not quite start the search.

The leadership skill that I am using the most is collaborate productively because I work with my mentor on different task. I also follow instructions from my mentor well. I do whatever he request. I can improve on completing projects effectively because I often slacked on my project. My mentor also uses collaborate productively. This skill helps me do my work because in order to be successful with my job I have to listen and do what I am told.

I have learned that I can take directions well and listen very well. I have also learned that I can take on different task like office work. The only challenge that I faced at my WLE was my mentor being absent a lot. At times I had to work with other councilors when he was not there when I needed him. I did not really get the chance to be creative with this WLE, because my plans did not go well. I planned on helping out students but I could not do that. I learned that I can take on different jobs and try new things other than what I know how to do

In order to find my WLE I just thought about how I wanted to help others. We were in the college unit and  just thought about regular high schools and how some of them do not get the opportunities that impact do. The most effective way of trying to find a job is by actually taking the time out to visit places because you can actually see what they do. I think being a professional in the work word means being able to get along with other employees and also have patience and be a good listener. You have to be able to take instructions well.

Today I just did the regular duties. I ran errands for my mentor. I've been on a constant paste. I haven't been able to improve in my WLE because my plan did not go as planned. My work place is not so great. It is a school so I haven't really been able to improve.

The final thoughts that I have about my work place are that the job was not what I expected. I expected to work individually more with student on things they wanted to know about the college application process. I feel like I could have shared my experience with them and the things thats I knew how to do. I was hoping to teach them things that we do at Impact. This work experience has taught me that I could keep my options open for future different future jobs and open my self up to different things besides what I am use to doing. I learned to be a more responsible person and a I also learned to be a good assistant.
